As a teenager, Stan Buck first came to know Christ and pursued his calling for ministry while at Epworth Forest Conference Center. Stan impacted thousands of lives for the Kingdom through his time in ministry serving at Sonrise Community Church in Fort Wayne. Stan also led a legacy of life changing ministry through experiences at Epworth Forest as where he mentored and encouraged hundreds of young leaders each summer. He shared, “For me Epworth has been holy ground.” Stan had a vision to see “another generation of people experience God’s grace” at Epworth and therefore he helped to champion the vision for of rebuilding Epworth Forest until he died in 2012. His efforts resulted in the first two waterfront lodges being built, and his family and friends have chosen to help carry on this vision and have raised over $400K towards building the third lodge in honor of his ministry and legacy.

The Need

The lodging facilities at Epworth Forest Conference Center are in need of considerable attention. Ninety percent of the beds at Epworth Forest Conference Center are in lodging at least fifty years or older, most do not meet guest expectations. Many of these buildings have exceeded the lifespan that routine maintenance will provide; the two-story lodges were only intended to be temporary solutions. In the past decade, four of those eight facilities are now unused/removed to best protect camper safety. If we do not continue to add new lodging facilities, the capacity and experience of the camp program will only diminish.

The Vision

This victory goal will build a new Waterfront Lodge at Epworth Forest Conference Center. The design of this lodge would be double that of the existing two newer lodges.

The Waterfront Lodges that opened in 2011 provide guests a comfortable space that exceeds expectations with comfortable sleeping, private restrooms, excellent community spaces, and wonderful kitchens for meals. Additionally, these buildings improve stewardship with high quality construction and a maintenance endowment for the future.

These new lodges host the most guests throughout the year being very desirable and functional to meet their needs. The larger size of the new lodge will allow us to bring even more guests to the site for retreats, serve larger groups, and to move campers at That Thing out of some of the antiquated housing of the two story buildings.

Guests of the new Waterfront Lodges are better rested from a good night’s sleep as well as have more comfortable down time throughout the day which improves their attitudes and reception throughout their discipleship process at Epworth. The in-lodge kitchen facilities provide the means to prepare meals if desired.

The proposed new Waterfront Lodge will be located east of Fenstermacher Lodge alongside the channel.
